There was no obvious incident that led to Matheson’s removal from the contest, though the broadcasters are likely searching for the moment the injury happened during the second intermission. Matheson had taken a therapy day following the Canadiens’ third game of the season, and has possibly been dealing with the issue since then.
Jayden Struble is ready to return, so the Canadiens do have a defenceman on the roster who can take Matheson’s place. However, the team could be down one of their two veteran blue-liners for the next game on Saturday versus the New York Islanders.
