The Montreal Canadiens have called up veteran AHL center Martin St. Pierre from the Hamilton Bulldogs. The call comes as a bit of a surprise, as the 30 year old St. Pierre has played just 38 career NHL games, accumulating 8 points.
St. Pierre has been dominant for the Bulldogs this season, putting up 8 points in 7 games, including 3 goals, despite being hampered by a minor injury earlier in October.
The call up doesn’t seem to fit very well with what the needs of the team are, as St. Pierre is yet another 5’9″ offense-only player, but at the same time everyone was skeptical when Montreal called up 32 year old AHL veteran Mathieu Darche in 2009-10, only to see him work himself into the lineup as a regular. I wouldn’t say to expect that, but you just never know.
With Travis Moen expected to be back soon though, it’s an odd choice of a call up. It makes you wonder about the reported fist slamming by Marc Bergevin, and the comments by Michel Therrien, if maybe a trade is coming?
