The Montreal Canadiens have placed defenceman Mark Streit on unconditional waivers.

This transaction will allow for a mutual contract termination, and Streit will be free to pursue opportunities elsewhere should he wish to continue his hockey career.
Brought in during the off-season to replace the power-play contributions of Andrei Markov, Streit was never able to have much of an impact on special teams from the start of the pre-season through the two games he dressed for, and his lack of speed at five-on-five made him too much of a liability to be used in any other situation.
Streit was placed on waivers on Thursday and cleared on Friday afternoon, with an assignment to the AHL a possibilitiy. However, the decision by Streit was to go the termination route rather than report to the minor leagues.
Signed to a $700,000 contract, the Canadiens will only be responsible for the few days he spent in the NHL to start the season, so the financial impact of that gamble is negligible. The roster impact of having to part with a player brought on to help a floundering man advantage may be more significant.
