Emerance Maschmeyer led the way in the shutout win

Les Canadiennes put together a much better effort in their second game in China and bounced back with a 2-0 win over the Vanke Rays Monday night in China.

Ann-Sophie Bettez and Kim Deschênes scored for Montreal and Emerance Maschmeyer made 17 saves for the shutout. It could have been much better for Montreal if not for Vanke goaltender Elaine Chuli who made 30 saves in a losing effort, many on prime scoring chances.

Montreal’s top line got the first real chances of the game. Bettez broke in alone and fired a snap shot that was stopped by Chuli and Noémie Marin had a chance at the doorstep as well.

Vanke had a huge chance with eight minutes remaining, but Maschmeyer was able to scramble and make a big save on Hanna Bunton.

Les Canadiennes killed off two penalties and then scored the first goal of the game with only nine seconds left in the period.

Cathy Chartrand took a shot that was tipped in the slot by Bettez past Chuli.

Montreal's penalty kill would kill off all five Vanke power plays.

Early in the second, Cayley Mercer broke in for Vanke but a diving poke check by defender Sophie Brault stopped the chance before it really got started. Bunton and Ashleigh Brykaliuk each had another opportunity shortly after but Maschmeyer made the save.

Sarah Lefort had a couple of chances with 14:25 remaining in the second, but after her first shot was saved by Chuli. the rebound went over the gaping net.

Vanke would get a third straight power play of the game but it would be Montreal extending their lead shortly after it expired. Deschênes would take the puck at the blue line and fire a shot over Chuli's blocker to make it 2-0.

Montreal opened the third period with a three-on-one break (which was also a two-on-zero) but Bettez and Lefort could not beat Chuli who was up to the task, sliding post to post to make a great pad save.

Chuli made another save shortly after on Emmanuelle Blais at point blank range. Right after, the play went the other way, but Bunton and Cayley Mercer couldn't finish a two-on-one of their own. Mercer put the shot right over the open net.

Later in the third, Lefort had another breakaway chance but couldn't beat the Vanke goaltender.

Maschmeyer had to make several chances in the final minutes with Chuli pulled to keep her shutout alive, including one while sitting down in her crease.
