Clarkson Cup Preview and Game Thread: Les Canadiennes vs Calgary Inferno

Everything you need to know about the CWHL championship

Shanna Martin / Eyes on the Prize

For the second straight season, Les Canadiennes will be facing off against the Calgary Inferno in the Clarkson Cup final. The championship is a one-game, winner-take-all matchup.

Last year, Calgary made their first appearance in the final and won their first Cup. Montreal has three Clarkson Cups in their history, but have lost their last three final appearances over four years. This is their third straight Finals appearance.

The two teams are very evenly matched and split the six games of the regular season series.

While Montreal will start Charline Labonté in goal, Calgary’s goaltending situation is an embarrassment of riches. Inferno coach Scott Reid told the media at practice yesterday that he knows who will start, but he hadn’t told the goaltender so did not want to disclose it.

Emerance Maschmeyer had the better numbers during the regular season, but lost Game 1 of the semifinal series against Toronto. Geneviève Lacasse started and won the final two games of the series.

Either way, Calgary can’t really go wrong but it will be interesting to see which goaltender Reid chooses. Delayne Brian - who won the game’s first star in last year’s Cup Final - has not played a playoff game this year and is also considered a top goaltender in the league.

The game will be held at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. Puck drop is at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. It will be broadcast live on Sportsnet in Canada and on Sportsnet Now. For those outside of Canada, the game will be streamed live here.
