The Montreal Canadiens placed forward Alex Belzile on waivers on Monday afternoon.

The move was made as the return of Mike Hoffman is imminent. The team did have an open roster spot when they sent down Ryan Poehling, but Sami Niku coming off of injured reserve would take that spot.

If Belzile clears, he will be a major contributor in Laval. The team has a lot of forward depth, but may have to deal with the absence of Poehling, who suffered an injury in the team’s last game on Saturday in Belleville.

Update, Tuesday 2:04pm: Belzile has cleared waivers and will report to the Laval Rocket.

Belzile made the opening roster for the Canadiens, but was always on the outside looking in as the team claimed Adam Brooks and had Cédric Paquette (and now Hoffman) return from their pre-season injuries.

The 30-year-old has one assist in two NHL regular season games, and one assist in six NHL playoff games. Last season in the American Hockey League, he had four goals and 10 assists in 17 games for the Rocket.
