Earlier this morning, Pierre LeBrun reported that several teams had contacted the Carolina Hurricanes about the availability of Sebastian Aho. These talks reportedly varied from the possibility of a trade, to the possibility of sending him an offer sheet. Apparently the Montreal Canadiens were among these teams.
According to sources, Carolina got calls from 3 different teams today on Sebastian Aho, hinting at an offer sheet. The 'Canes told them they would match any offer sheet. Carolina did tell them they would entertain trade conversation. Believe that Habs is among 3 teams who called— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) July 1, 2019
Carolina has reportedly said they’d match any offer sheet, but the fact that they are also entertaining trade offers suggests they’d be willing to part ways with him. Offer sheets are rare, but the Canadiens have cap space, and Carolina is a budget team, so they could prepare the type of offer that would be hard for the Hurricanes to match. That is, of course, if Marc Bergevin is willing to pay the cost in draft picks (likely four first-round selections) should any offer sheet be successful.
The interest in Aho was first reported this morning, but does not seem to have died down.
Canadiens have significant interest in Aho. There's talk the Habs are trying to make this work. Is a trade doable, or will they present an offer sheet? This is something to watch. https://t.co/O7xOttFqSQ— David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) July 1, 2019
At this point, it is purely speculation, but it seems that the Canadiens are in heavy pursuit. Nothing guaranteed, but certainly a developing story worth following as the day goes on.
