Johnny Gaudreau, who played last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets and began his NHL career with the Calgary Flames, has died at 31.

The Blue Jackets confirmed the news. Reports suggest that he and his brother, Matt, were struck and killed while riding their bicycles in New Jersey on Thursday. Matt was also a hockey player, most recently playing for the ECHL’s Worcester Railers in 2021-22.

Johnny won the Hobey Baker Award as the best player in the NCAA in 2014. He attended the NHL All-Star Game in each of his seven seasons, and claimed the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2017, awarded for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct.

The Eyes On The Prize staff offer our condolences to Johnny and Matt’s families, friends, and fans.
