Some thoughts on the situation now facing the Montreal Canadiens’ general manager.

In a short episode of Habsent Minded EXTRA I try to give my take on the offer sheet that Jesperi Kotkaniemi signed with the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. While new information has been added to the situation, mainly that the Hurricanes had already started to negotiate with Kotkaniemi about an extension, I tried to organize my thoughts in podcast form.

  • No fault should be laid at Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s feet; this is on Marc Bergevin. The Montreal Canadiens GM should have acted sooner, just as soon as when Danault was lost in free agency. That was the time when Bergevin should have acted to get the former third-round pick under contract.
  • While the Sebastian Aho offer sheet was set as fair but on the cautious side, this one is meant to flip the season for Montreal Canadiens.
  • There are two options: let KK walk and take the compensation, or match the offer sheet. Is there any way Montreal can come out as winner under either circumstance?

It remains to be seen what Montreal will do, but it is not as clear cut as the Aho offer sheet that Carolina matched within minutes. There is a high risk in either option for Bergevin, and at risk is also his legacy in Montreal as a general manager.
