The Bell Centre has seen two games in this young NHL season, and both have ended with overtime wins for the Montreal Canadiens. Both games were tight. Both games required a late one-goal comeback on the Canadiens part, and both games required someone to step up and play hero.
Both times, the hero for the Montreal Canadiens was Cole Caufield. We need to have a serious conversation about how well this man is playing right now.

Caufield has now started the season with five goals in as many games. A goal per game is nice, but the fact that he’s scoring in huge moments for this team is something entirely different. You can devote extra resources to stopping Nick Suzuki, or covering Juraj Slafkovsky, but right now, there is virtually nothing you can do to stop Cole Caufield from finding a chance to ruin your night.
If Caufield has the game on his stick, that’s a kiss of death. If you’re playing with a lead, he’s the last person you want to leave open. His first 40-goal season has felt like it’s on the way for a few years now, and as early as it may be, it feels different this time. It feels like he’s ready to put this team on his back in the biggest moments.
Caufield may, or may not get a nod from team USA when the Olympics roll around this year. Frankly, most Canadiens fans would prefer that their neighbours to the south leave him at home, because the way he’s shooting right now makes him a real problem for any team he faces.
We’re seeing the best version of Cole Caufield that we’ve ever seen. Whether or not he finally crosses that 40-goal plateau, his clutch factor is something that will prove invaluable to this team’s pursuit of a return to the playoffs.
They don’t ask how, they ask how many, and the answer for Caufield right now is a lot, and whenever he wants it.
