Habs 2010 Stanley Cup Party Saved By The Blue Light Refreshment Duo

What an idiot I am!

About three weeks ago, I firmly believed that the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Canadiens‘ destiny. So sure in fact that I counted out the dates on the calendar that it would take for the limit eight additional wins, give or take a loss, settled on June 5 as a likely post Cup party date, and e-mailed just about everyone I knew inviting them over to the bash.

Man, what was I off! What was I thinking?

Anyways, some e-mails must have gotten redirected, CC’ed to uninvited third parties, and pasted to Facebook or something, because every aquaintance I know of, even some that barely follow hockey, showed up thirsty, along with a bunch of rank strangers, all angry that there was no party happening.

I thought I was dead meat. I mean how embarrassing!

Well lo and behold, the day was saved (along with the party and my rep) when these two hotties decked out in skin-tight Blue Light emblazoned outfits showed up, female friends in tow, kegs of beer loaded in the back of some sort of psychedelic customized Santa Clause sled. I never did get their names, but they informed me I had entered and some sort of contest promotion and won, and then they whisked us all of to some secret location, to an wilder party than the one I imagined.

The party left me sore, hungover, walking funny, and totally over the fact that our team didn’t win the Cup.

The funny thing is, I remember buying a case of Blue Light, but I don’t even recall entering the contest!

It seems I had somehow, unbeknowst to my unsober self, entered the “Blue Zone.”

must have been Googling for Habs girls on the internet like I tend to do when I’m sad and need CHeering up, when I came across a picture of the Blue Light Refreshment Duo girls. A few link clicks later, I was at this site, and realizing I had a case of cold ones in the fridge, went looking for my pin number.

The rest is a total blur!

I mean, it felt like I had partied hard the night before, cause I was feeling like I had just celebrated 24 Stanley Cups.

I spent all day yesterday backtracking and flashbacking, trying to retrace my steps. I had to piece this all together so I could tell other friends about it.

I do recall sometime back in the 1980’s, when an “Enter The Blue Zone” party crew came to my hometown. They had set up at my local corner bar – this was before karaoke was called karaoke – and they had this thing going where you entered the contest, picked out a song to sing, and prizes were given out.

Now I remember parts of the eighties like most hippies recall the sixties, but what I do recall was signing up to sing “Born To Be Wild“, leaving the bar for about a half hour to head back to the house – I lived around the block – and chug a few extra Blues while giving the song five quick run thrus to help remember the lyrics.attending a British Columbia Lions CFL football game, Pamela was discovered bu a talent agent in a most unusual way. Dressed scantilly in a Labatt’s t-shirt, her image was appeared on the stadium’s big screen, eliciting a huge cheer from the fans at the game. As a result, Pam was signed to a commercial contract with Labatt’s, becaming their first Blue Zone girl. The campaign was a huge success, and soon other commercial and advertising offers poured in for Anderson. From there she went on to Baywatch and infamous video fame, and the rest is history.

When I returned to the bar, my time slot had come up, and they handed me a lyric sheet!

I was feeling pretty darn good by then, real cool as I hit the stage, and proceded to sing the first verse twice!

Needless to say, whatever the grand prize was that night, I didn’t win it, but I did get a free beer, a Blue Light ball cap and a cassette recording of my disaster for posterity.

Now that was then, and this is now. The only thing unchanged perhaps is the hotness of the Blue Lights girls.

Today’s Blue Light Refreshment Duo are every bit as party hearty as the 1980’s Blue Zone girls, which back then, believe it or not, had Pamela Anderson* as its poster girl.

From what I’ve been able to tell, the Duo are situated up in Canada’s north region, and are confined to a cabin, lonely most of the time, until alerted by parties needing their attention. They must now have run out of Air Miles or reindeer or something, because this new contest has been enabled, allowing us regular stiffs to enter, be airlifted to their comfy northern pad, and party down with them and hundreds of their friends.

So, you don’t have to be some down-on-his-luck Habs fan without a party to go to, to get in. You just have to buy a case of Labatt Blue Light, find that pin number, go to this official promotional website, enter the number and get luckier than the Philadelphia Flyers.

As the site says, you and one extremely lucky friend, a crew of skilled Blue Light Girls, over 100 contest winners and the Blue Light Refreshment Duo are on the guest list. They have activities like skiing, snowboarding, tubing and frolicking in the great outdoors, followed by a crazy huge party with a ton of people, and most importantly, what happens at the Headquarters stays at the head quarters!

If you make it in and win a trip to the Refreshment Duo’s Headquarters, there’s a hide-a-bed there somewhere with my Stanley Cup keychain under it. There’s a fifty dollar reward for its safe return.

It’s my good luck charm for a 25th Stanley Cup!

*Vancouver’s Pamela Anderson, former Blue Zone poster girl, was born famous and born to be famous, in every unlikely way. Back in 1967, Canada’s centennial year, there was a contest with promotional awarded to the first baby born on July 1. At exactly 12:01, on Vancouver Island, Pamela was born first. Years later, while attending a British Columbia Lions CFL football game, Pamela was discovered bu a talent agent in a most unusual way.
