EOTP Selects Team Canada – December Edition

There is now exactly a month until Hockey Canada’s group of directors and GMs and whomever else reveal their 2014 Olympic edition of Team Canada, so like we did in November, EOTP got together – well not literally – and voted on who should make the team. The format, unlike many other publications, was that we picked the team as if the Olympics were starting in the next few weeks. That meant that Stamkos regretfully had to be omitted, but rather than lead to disagreement, that actually strengthened the consensus. We lost a voter this time around, so totals are out of 6 rather than 7. Our December Olympics (we like to imagine they’re being held in Montreal, or at least somewhere in our time zone) Team Canada:

Forwards

Eric Staal (6) – Sidney Crosby (6) – Corey Perry (6)

Taylor Hall (6) – Jonathan Toews (6) – Matt Duchene (6)

Logan Couture (6) – John Tavares (6) – Martin St. Louis (6)

Jamie Benn (6) – Patrice Bergeron (6) – Joe Thornton (6)

Rick Nash (4) – Ryan Getzlaf (4)

Defense

P.K. Subban (6) – Shea Weber (6)

Duncan Keith (6) – Drew Doughty (6)

Marc-Edouard Vlasic (6) – Alex Pietrangelo (6)

Dan Hamhuis (6) – Dan Boyle (3)

Goalies

Carey Price (6)

Roberto Luongo (5)

Braden Holtby (3)

This month sees Ryan Getzlaf and Rick Nash inserted into the lineup at forward, while Tyler Seguin and the aformentioned Stamkos dropping out. Seguin would be the next call up this time around On defense, despite the seemingly wide open field that the media continues to discuss, the only non-consensus choice was a split between Dan Boyle and Brent Seabrook, with the latter getting one vote too few. Suspected PHWA member Marc Dumont attempted to insert Keith at both right and left defense, before finally settling on Bowmeester. In goal, Luongo lost a vote but kept the majority thanks to his experience and consistency. Braden Holtby, despite a shaky few weeks, takes the final spot in goal away from Corey Crawford. Check back for our EOTP final Olympic roster at the beginning of January. And as always weigh in with your own picks in the comments section.
