David Schlemko will miss another 3-4 weeks

On Wednesday, the Montreal Canadiens announced that David Schlemko, acquired this summer from the Vegas Golden Knights, had surgery on his injured right hand and will miss more games than once thought.

The injury had forced Schlemko to miss all of the Habs’ training camp. Signs of an eventual return were on the horizon when he was sent to the Laval Rocket for a conditioning stint, and after playing only a single game with Laval the blue-liner was recalled to the Habs’ roster.

Since then it was assumed Schlemko would return imminently, however he did not join the Canadiens on their California trip, and now we know why.

With potentially three to four weeks minimum before Schlemko can return to duty, the Habs are left with one less option on defence. Thank goodness for Victor Mete, but Montreal is now stuck with Jordie Benn,  Brandon Davidson and Joe Morrow as their depth left-handed defencemen.

The team could recall a defender from Laval to compensate, or the delayed return of David Schlemko could force Marc Bergevin to look elsewhere to bolster his blue line.
