Catching The Torch: Oct 28-Nov.3 Edition

The Three Stars

1. D Magnus Nygren

While he has not had a turn with the Canadiens yet, Magnus Nygren’s offensive efforts for the Hamilton Bulldogs are no doubt building a case for him to get a cup of coffee with the big club this season. In his first game of the week versus the Toronto Marlies, Nygren would assist on the game-tying goal to force overtime, then would also factor into the overtime goal with his 2nd assist of the game in a 2-1 victory for Hamilton. He would carry his offensive efforts through to the next game as well, picking up an assist in what would be an eventual 3-2 shootout loss for the Bulldogs versus the Abbotsford Heat. Nygren has scored a goal and seven assists in 10 games this season, which ties him for the team lead in scoring in Hamilton. Magnus Nygren was drafted in the 4th round, 113th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2011 NHL Draft.

2. D Dalton Thrower

A complete turnaround from his fortunes last season, Dalton Thrower has found new lifewith the Vancouver Giants continues to be one of the more inspiring comeback stories in the Canadiens farm system this year. Thrower would begin his week marking a pair of assists as the Giants would take a 6-5 victory over the Prince George Cougars. He would earn special distinction the following night, scoring the overtime game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory in a rematch with Prince George. He would mark an assist in the following game, a 6-4 loss to the Spokane Chiefs. Thrower would finish his week scoring his 6th goal of the season in an eventual 4-3 shootout victory for the Giants over the Kamloops Blazers. Thrower’s 6 goals in 15 games match his goals production from last season, but in 39 fewer games and is enjoying a 7-game points streak with 2 goals and 7 assists over the span. Dalton Thrower was drafted in the 2nd round, 51st overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2012 NHL Draft.

3. RW Jérémy Grégoire

Jérémy Grégoire continues to be one of the most impressive early surprises from the 2013 NHL Draft as he continues to score at a prodigious rate for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Grégoire began his week by scoring his first goal in six games which came as excellent timing as it forced overtime for Baie-Comeau versus the Quebec Remparts, although the game would end in a 6-5 shootout loss for Baie-Comeau. He would provide an even greater impact in the following match versus Rimouski Oceanic, scoring a goal and assist as Baie-Comeau would come back from a 3-0 deficit to force overtime, where he would also score in the shootout in what became an eventual 4-3 victory for Baie-Comeau. He would maintain his scoring campaign through his final game of the week as well, scoring a goal and assist in a dominant 9-2 victory for Baie-Comeau over the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. Grégoire has scored 15 goals and 14 assists over 18 games, which has him leading Baie-Comeau in scoring, puts him 5th in overall scoring in the QMJHL while enjoying a 13-game points streak, scoring 10 goals and 11 assists over that time. Jérémy Grégoire was drafted in the 6th round, 176th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2013 NHL Draft.
