Canadiens vs. Sharks game recap: In Deep Water

The 18-year losing streak continues as the Habs fall to 1-4-1 in San Jose.

At the beginning of the first game of the traditionally dreadful western road trip from hell, the Canadiens and the Sharks exchanged chances, and then exchanged lightening fast goals as first Logan Couture and then Jonathan Drouin scored 16 seconds apart.

The brisk pace continued, the Habs taking the first penalty — slashing to Tomas Plekanec — but they killed it off comfortably.

Andrew Shaw had a couple of chances as the period progressed, and the Habs looked pretty sharp, picking up eleven shots to San Jose's eight through the first twenty.

The second period did not get off to an auspicious start.

Joe Pavelski scored just 53 seconds in on a puck that went careening off several players before ending up behind Carey Price.

It was pretty much all downhill from there.

Charles Hudon ended up in the box for tripping about a minute later. Although the Habs killed that off, Ales Hemsky took a penalty, followed rapidly by one from Danault, and the Sharks made it 3-1 after the first penalty expired.

The Habs finally got a power play of their own, and made the most of it, Weber's slapshot blasting past Jones at 10:37.

Hudon got a pair of chances one-on-one against Jones when Gallagher drew a penalty, but unfortunately he took a penalty almost immediately afterwards. Couture scored on the ensuing power play, and although the Habs challenged for goaltender interference, the goal stood.

Montreal got a pair of power plays thereafter, but Jones shut the door, and by the end of the period, San Jose had outshot them 20-12 in the second frame alone.

The third period was a pretty lacklustre affair, the Sharks generating a little, and the Habs generating less.

Droin frightened Montreal fans everywhere when he was very slow to get up after going down along the boards, but he remained in the game.

With about two minutes to go, the Habs pulled Price for the extra attacker, sending Pacioretty, Lehkonen, Drouin, Galchenyuk, Mete, and Weber out.

Thornton scored into the empty net, making it 5-2, and though the Habs drew an extremely late penalty with 26 seconds left, the score remained unchanged

Thoughts

  • The losing streak in San Jose continues.
  • For a game with seven goals and 65 shots, it wasn't very eventful./
