Canadiens vs Lightning – Building Another Carey Price Shrine Edition

  • ‘Filppula’ is fun to say. Filppula. Filppula.
  • Carey Price is amazing.
  • Prior to the last five minutes of the third, there were literally two good things I had to say about tonight’s game, and one of them was that Valteri Filppula’s name is fun to say.
  • Back to Carey Price. Naming your future child after him isn’t good enough anymore. Let’s all change our names and the names of our children and the names of our parents to Carey Price, like, now.
  • Why did the Habs not play the whole game like they played in the last five minutes (and overtime)?
  • Why hasn’t anyone told Lars Eller that that face-off violation is an actual rule he actually has to follow if he actually doesn’t want to be in the penalty box in the actual last few minutes of the game?
  • Why is Ben Bishop so large?
  • Why is Ryan Malone?
  • Some flashes of brilliance from the EGG line.
  • Some flashes of brilliance from Brian Gionta and Tomas Plekanec.
  • Has Max Pacioretty returned too early?
  • So, I’ve decided to stop complaining about officiating. It’s been objectively bad in every NHL game I’ve seen this season and most of the ones I have seen in the last few years. The refs are not out to get the Habs, and they’re not out to favour the Habs, either. They’re not out to get anyone. They’re just not very good, in general.
  • The last five minutes… can we just play those over and over again twelve times and pretend the rest of the game didn’t happen?
  • Danny Briere playing with Michael Bournival and Rene Bourque? Not so terrible. And that is my Rene Bourque compliment for this edition of the Top Six Minutes, I forgot last time, JD__, but there’s one here. Maybe I’ll include two next time to make up for it.
  • Yay loser point! Yay exciting last little bit of game!
  • Okay, perspective: Through two periods, the Canadiens had 13 shots to Tampa Bay’s 23 (45-29 total), even though they had three power plays to Tampa’s one at that point. Reminder: the Lightning played in Boston yesterday afternoon, and lost Steven Stamkos, who is responsible for over a quarter of their scoring, to a horrifying injury.
  • P.K. Subban had 6 of those 13 shots, by the way.
  • Not to take any credit away from the Tampa Bay Lightning. They’ve been good this season, but they were without their most important player who just happens to be one of the best players in the world and a terrifying offensive threat.
  • The Habs played terribly, and even worse, they were horrifically boring.
  • I am leaving the following bullet points in because I wrote them at the beginning of the third period and they should not be cancelled out by the excitement of the last five minutes and overtime.
  • If I could make this post 500 swear words, I would. But Andrew said I can’t. Then he said “this game is so bad that I believe you could be serious. How bad is that?”
  • … I was serious.
  • Don’t get me wrong. I’m not panicking, I’m not losing my head, I don’t think the sky is falling. I’m just disappointed. You know when your parents invite you and your boyfriend to dinner? And then he forgets and goes out with his friends instead? And then he “doesn’t hear his cell phone” for a while? So of course you show up to your family’s house extremely late? With a disheveled, half-drunk, surly boyfriend? And the rest of your siblings showed up with perfect smiling doctors and lawyers who brought fancy wine? The Habs are that boyfriend. That’s how disappointed I am right now.
  • And that’s how mad.
  • These Habs are jerks.
  • They need to do better. They need to stop playing like this. It’s so bad. They have so many good players, you’d think they’d figure this out at some point. I am so tired of typing those words out.
  • Three stars: Carey Price, Carey Price, and Carey Price. Sorry, commenters, I’m sure you understand.
