Canadiens vs. Devils Top Six Minutes: A perfectly cromulent pre-season victory

Pre-Game Thoughts

  • There are no NFL games for me to also try to keep an eye on tonight, so it’s pure unfiltered insanity from me
  • The fourth line that the Habs are rolling out is basically equivalent to agitating three honey badgers and siccing them on someone honestly…Hoping for a great showing out of Xavier Simoneau personally
  • Also after a solid win last night, it’s hard to shake the possible feeling of a letdown tonight, but that just might be the years of scar tissue around this team talking
  • Currently making a new DnD character for a campaign, and I’m wondering what class each Habs player would play if they did a full team campaign
  • Also New Jersey stinks, figuratively and literally…Newark smells like diapers

First Period

  • Justin Kea is officiating this game, and based on what I’ve seen from him at the AHL level, it’s going to be a disaster tonight
  • An excellent tribute to Alexei Emelin by Logan Mailloux to start the game, right down to taking himself out of the play!
  • It would appear that Owen Beck saw Oliver Kapanen’s performance last night, and is trying to match that early on
  • Well, I don’t think Zack Hayes is going to make the team guys
  • Samuel Montembeault is already in form with those pad saves though!
  • Double Agent Kovacevic strikes!
  • I never want to see a drop pass again, please stop the madness Marty
  • Oh sure, now Jake Allen decides to be a brick wall against a power play
  • The penalty kill being a strength so far this preseason remains a shock to me, big credit where it’s due though
  • Jayden Struble bullying Nathan Bastian is again a reminder that he might be the strongest dude in the Habs organization
  • I can’t be sure if it’s just the poor reply angle or what, but it looked like they penalized Trudeau for a phantom trip?
  • Either way, that was certainly one of the periods of hockey of all time

Second Period

  • David Reinbacher is making a really REALLY strong push to be an NHL player to start the year
  • PEZ DISPENSING GOALS BABYYYY
  • Excellent work by the fourth line to create that goal
  • And even better work to get out of a full scrum without taking any penalties as well
  • I would like the power play to call the “score a goal” play now
  • See, I would have said that’s a good goal because Simoneau is being pushed into Jake Allen
  • But, it’s also the preseason and I’m just some dude sitting in front of a screen in Buffalo
  • I SWEAR TO GOD IF SLAF IS HURT
  • The step down from Lane Hutson to Mike Matheson on the power play has been noticeable
  • Which just makes me giddy thinking about Hutson getting games with Suzuki and Caufield soon
  • Pez, my dude what was that?
  • I just got done saying how well behaved the fourth line had been tonight, and they reward me by creating a five on three penalty kill
  • And the Devils give the Habs a hand, I’ll take it!
  • If this follows the same pattern as last night…The Habs are going to score a billion goals in about five seconds in the third period right?

Third Period

  • Loving the synergy between Owen Beck and Filip Mesar so far tonight, bodes well for the Rocket this year
  • Florian Xhekaj opting to try and beat the goalie instead of just jamming a puck into the pads is a welcomed site
  • A goalie wearing #95 feels like a sin of some kind, in a religion that doesn’t actually exist
  • My only non power play complaint is that I want this team to clean up the penalties, can’t be taking this many especially from the fourth line
  • Joel Armia remains just a bafflingly good defensive forward, and I really wish he could find a semi-regular offensive touch
  • I blinked and missed the Habs getting a two-man advantage apparently
  • Would be great if they scored on this one!
  • Or not, it’s preseason for everyone!
  • TRUDEAU!
  • SUZUKI!
  • A SECOND GOAL!
  • It’s a strange feeling to watch the Habs actually close down a game competently and not just hold on for dear life so far this year
  • A two-goal game for Michael Pezzetta…Just as we all expected!
  • See you all against Toronto!

EOTP 3 Stars will return for the regular season.
