The Montreal Canadiens are right back at it tonight after losing their season-opener on Wednesday. It was a frustrating night when the team deserved more than a loss by a 5-2 margin, but the players are mostly disappointed in themselves that they couldn’t turn that effort into a win.

Their desire to get a first victory under their belt should be even higher this evening as a result, and they face a team they were able to beat on three occasions last year. The Detroit Red Wings will be trying to work themselves up to a competitive NHL pace for the first time, while the Canadiens have already shaken off the cobwebs. They will want a fast start to take advantage of the situation.

It’s Jakub Dobeš who gets the call in net, as he will at least once in the 17 back-to-backs the Canadiens will face this year. He’s up against John Gibson who is with a new team after 12 seasons with the Anaheim Ducks. His save percentage has steadily fallen over the years, but in just 28 starts in 2024-25 he posted a .912 save percentage. Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon weren’t markedly worse that Gibson’s recent form last year, but perhaps a change of scenery could see the return of a netminder who routinely posted a .920 mark early in his career.
