A busy night on the NHL schedule features two Atlantic Division battles taking place at the same time, The Ottawa Senators (52 points) visit the Boston Bruins (52), while the Montreal Canadiens (52), have travelled to Detroit for the third game of the season series with the Red Wings (47). The team that Montreal just beat in comeback fashion, the Tampa Bay Lightning (53) sits idle tonight, and will see at least one of those 52-point teams move to 54 on the campaign and at least temporarily (Tampa Bay will have games in hand on all parties) occupy the Atlantic’s third seed.
It would need to be a win by Montreal and a Bruins victory of any kind for the Habs to be the ones to hold that rank this evening, and they could say they earned it the hard way by beating Tampa Bay twice in about three weeks, taking matters into their own hands. There’s still a long way to go in the 2024-25 season, but the Habs seeing themselves as one of the top three in the group would be another major boost to the confidence that has been growing since December.
