The pre-season started off well with some spirited efforts, or at least strong finishes, in the opening two games. With a lineup a bit closer to what the Canadiens will see when the season starts, that wasn’t at all the case on Thursday night when the Toronto Maple Leafs dressed their bottom six and depth players for a game in Montreal. Seven goals against are one thing, but only mustering 13 shots was perhaps the better indicator of the effort.

Now the Canadiens have made the trip to Toronto for a rematch, and the tables are turned with Toronto having most of its stars (minus Auston Matthews) in the lineup and the Canadiens having their lower-tier forwards in action. Can the Habs replicate the effort their opponent put forth on Thursday by outplaying a better team on paper? That’s certainly what Martin St-Louis will be looking for.

The goaltenders for the game will be Kaapo Kähkönen and Jacob Fowler, the two goalies who will share the net in Laval this season. That likely means Samuel Montembeault and Jakub Dobeš will get the full 60 minutes in their starts over the last two games.
