Canadiens @ Maple Leafs Top Six Minutes: Dobes and the Youngsters Hang On

The Habs were outmatched on paper and on the ice, but Dobeš kept it close, and they got out without being embarrassed.

Pre-Game Thoughts

  • Cracks knuckles Let’s see if I remember how to do these.
  • I haven’t watched hockey in so long, you guys. (Except for Denmark’s Olympic qualification games, because would it be me if I wasn’t unreasonably hard core about supporting Team Denmark.)
  • It’s a good thing it’s preseason for everyone cause while I know almost everyone’s name, I certainly am not going to be able to put it together with a face or number.
  • It is seriously weird to see Pacioretty in a Leafs jersey.
  • Considering the lineups, I just hope the Habs put up a good fight.

First Period

  • Pez hits Tavares, that seemed less than pleasant.
  • They’re not exactly clean, but that was a decent shift in the offensive zone for Montreal.
  • Should would be nice if the Habs power play showed some actual life. Might be a lot to ask though.
  • What even is this power play.
  • Matt Drake will be pleased to know that I appreciated that move from Roy.
  • That was nice from Engström to keep Domi from getting a good look.
  • I guess considering the Habs’ lineup, I’m not mad about how this is going?
  • And then they immediately take a penalty. Welp.
  • Oh no, that lane Reinbacher and Struble left for Marner and Tavares of all people.
  • Domi’s gonna score, I can feel it.
  • Please let power play attempt two goes slightly better than power play one.
  • Recording just a single shot in 15 minutes seems less than ideal, just putting that out there.
  • Well. It wasn’t as bad as the last power play, but one certainly can’t say it was good.
  • Lane Hutson is fun though.
  • Is it just me, or is everyone on both teams falling over more than one might expect?
  • Take everything I say with a large pinch of salt, since I haven’t watched hockey in such a long time, but I’ve liked Jakub Dobeš so far.

Second Period

  • Oh boy, no Nylander to start the second.
  • I feel like the Habs keep getting in their own way.
  • Struble trying to make things happen on that shift!
  • The way I still think 62 is Lehkonen, it’s a problem.
  • Neither team defending particularly well leads to a very nice goal from Dvorak to tie it up. Was a nice pass too.
  • Dobeš really starting to inspire comfort back there for me.
  • Dobeš inspiring confidence, this defense not so much. Which, in their defense, is not entirely unexpected.
  • That was the most effective playing with no skate blade I’ve ever seen from Reinbacher.
  • Habs so lucky that Domi pass was to absolutely no one.
  • Well, that was just bad from Engström.
  • On the one hand, really I’m not surprised that this roster is struggling, on the other, ouch.

Third Period

  • Ooh good move by Struble there against Domi.
  • Hutson trying to create things with no one to create things for.
  • The Habs seem slightly less panic-y than they did in the first two periods.
  • Not sure if Montreal is playing better or if Toronto has stopped playing.
  • That was perhaps one of the best offensive zone shifts from the Habs ending with that shot from Engström.
  • Dobeš batting aside that Marner attempt like it’s nothing.
  • We knew it wasn’t gonna be good with those rosters, and honestly, I more or less got what I wanted.
  • My only real takeaway is that Dobeš is gonna be a nice option in net.

EOTP 3 Stars will return for the regular season.
