The Canadiens have the rare opportunity to play a team in the second half of a back-to-back while they themselves are coming off a day of rest. It’s not that Montreal seems to mind playing twice in 24 hours — they just won another of those no-rest games on Sunday — but they’ll just have that much more energy as they try to make it a quick 2-1 homestand.
Despite Jakub Dobes running his season record to 5-0 versus the New York Rangers, Samuel Montembeault will be back between the pipes, looking to beat the Lightning for a second time this year. He surrendered just two goals in a 5-2 win against the team that ranks first in the league in offence, and that’s what Martin St-Louis is hoping to see repeated.
The Lightning are coming off a loss versus the Toronto Maple Leafs, and are now 5-6-1 dating back to Montreal’s visit in late December. They know they need to start playing better to fend off the Habs and the other teams rising up the Eastern Conference standings. The question is how much more Montreal wants to win tonight’s game.
