After comments made by John Tortorella after the last game the Flyers played, a 7-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, general manager Daniel Brière decided to act immediately on replacing his team’s head coach. Tonight will be the first game for Brad Shaw in an interim role as he just tries to get a disappointing team over the finish line.
The players had already given up on the season even with Tortorella trying to push them along, so it’s hard to say how they will react to today’s news. Does it snap them to attention, or just take away one of the few driving forces the team had for the final few games? Teams generally fare better at least for a short period with a changing of the guard, which isn’t what Montreal wants to see from what was supposed to be the one easy opponent on this road trip.
Maybe the mood was improved by today’s news, but the roster wasn’t. Player for player, Montreal is the stronger team in this matchup. The Habs’ desire to play in the post-season should rise above any boost in energy Philadelphia received from its major change today.
