The Montreal Canadiens made one transaction on trade deadline day, sending Michael Chaput, who had been playing in the AHL since clearing waivers, to the Arizona Coyotes for Jordan Weal, who is expected to play a role with the NHL team. It’s not a significant move, but was in line with the current state of the team.
Things were a bit more busy on New Jersey’s end, as the Devils traded away tonight’s projected starter Keith Kinkaid to Columbus, then squeaked in a trade of Marcus Johansson to the Boston Bruins right before the deadline. They were able to ship out two of their pending unrestricted free agents for at least something in return.
As far as tonight’s game in concerned, the Canadiens once again have everyone healthy now that Jonathan Drouin has recovered from the flu. Weal is not yet ready to be inserted in the lineup, so the Canadiens will run with the same formation they had on Thursday versus the Philadelphia Flyers.
The trades shake things up for the Devils. There are now plenty of young players on the roster looking to earn some experience ahead of the next season. Connor Carrick makes his debut after being acquired from the Dallas Stars earlier, and with Kinkaid now in Columbus, Cory Schneider will be backed up by MacKenzie Blackwood, who will likely be given his fair share of games down the stretch.
