With Samuel Montembeault not in the lineup and unlikely to be during the tournament, there are no Montreal Canadiens players for fans to cheer on in tonight’s opening game between Canada and Sweden. But there are many of the league’s superstars taking to the ice at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Wednesday night.
Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid are donning the red maple leaf on the same team, but not playing on the same line as Canada has spread out the offensive wealth. McDavid will be centring Sam Reinhart and Mitch Marner, while Crosby has shifted to the wing to play alongside fellow Cole Harbour native Nathan MacKinnon.
Sweden can’t match up in terms of offensive firepower, but they make that up with a stellar group of defencemen and solid goaltending. If Sweden is to pull off an upset of the favoured Canadians, it will be in those two aspects that they excelled.
