While Canada enjoyed a rather comfortable 4-0 win over Finland last night, looking at times to be a class above one of the elite nations in the hockey world, the score should have been much higher than that given just how many chances the Canadians were getting. That was one of the concerns going into the tournament, and it doesn’t help that it was the 17-year-olds Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer who were responsible for three of the goals, not the large group of returnees from last year.
In fact, Canada looked a lot like the team they will play tonight. They lacked finish, but not effort, and that’s been the identity of Latvia on the international hockey scene for their entire history. It’s not a team that can score a lot of goals, but the players will wear you down and fight for every puck — their now four-year stay in the Top Division despite the lack of skilled stars is testament to their work ethic.
While this probably won’t go down as one of the best games of the 2025 tournament, it could still be one of its most entertaining with how passionate the play is on the ice. Expect Canada to come away with another win and a 2-0 start, but it’s not a result that will be handed to them.
