It was a shocking result the last time Canada was on the ice at Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata: a shootout loss to a Latvian team not expected to make any noise. Since that loss, the disappointment of the defeat has been lessened somewhat after the Latvians also played the Americans well in their next game. Perhaps it’s just a case of Latvia not being a pushover this year, and having some actual talent to compete with the top teams.

Regardless, the lack of goal-scoring remains an issue for the team — even the Americans were able to score five goals while playing an even game with the Latvians — and going without a goal in an eight-round shootout is all the evidence you need of how tough goals have been to come by. That isn’t helped by the loss for the remainder of the tournament of Matthew-Schaefer, perhaps Canada’s most dynamic player on the blue line.

Germany has so far lost 10-4 to Team USA and 3-1 to Finland. The takeaway from those results is that they still have the ability to score when needed, so Canada will have to find a way to get the puck in the back in the net to avoid a second straight upset.
