The unmistakable red helmet of Laval Rocket head coach Joel Bouchard is preparing to hit the ice once again, as the American Hockey League affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens is preparing to finally take flight in the delayed and condensed 2020-21 season.
The squad got a bit of an early jump as Group B during the brief Montreal Canadiens training camp, but now the team can finally prepare for real.
The Laval Rocket announced today that 32 players will participate in the team’s training camp which is set to start on Friday, January 22, 2021 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.https://t.co/v5495ooQfS— Rocket de Laval (@RocketLaval) January 21, 2021
The training camp will start on Friday, January 22nd. The Rocket will play intra-squad games on Monday, Jan. 25, on Thursday, Jan. 28 and on Sunday, Jan. 31. No pre-season game is scheduled for the team this year.
The world continues to feel the ramifications of the global pandemic, and it is no different in the world of hockey as the AHL had to make adjustments in order to even have a season this year. The Rocket, for their part, will be playing out of the Bell Centre along with their parent club, in order to operate under one controlled environment.
Several contracted players who would have otherwise been on the Rocket training camp roster have left the organization in recent weeks, including Alexandre Alain who decided to pursue an academic career full-time in physiotherapy, as well as Brent Gates and Pascal Aquin, two minor-league players, who now play in the ECHL.
Among the players invited to the training camp are junior-aged players whose seasons in the Western Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League have not started yet. Although Kaiden Guhle already has a NHL Entry-level contract, Gianni Fairbrother, Jan Mysak, and Jacob Leguerrier signed Amateur Tryout contracts (ATO) in order to join the camp. They are scheduled to rejoin their junior teams once/if those leagues start up.
The only Canadiens draft pick scheduled to play in the WHL or OHL who will not be joining the Rocket training camp is goaltender Frederik Dichow who has committed to playing out the rest of the season in the Dutch Metal Ligaen for the Odense Bulldogs.
