One day after hiring a new head coach in Joel Bouchard, the Laval Rocket announced the signing of former Cape Breton Screaming Eagles captain Phélix Martineau to a one-year, one-way AHL contract.

The 20-year-old centre has spent his entire QMJHL career with the team in Cape Breton, and was headed to Concordia University this upcoming season before signing in the AHL. In 260 QMJHL games he tallied 90 goals and 91 assists along with 289 penalty minutes and was -3.

The soon to be 21 year old forward is the newest piece in a massive rebuilding effort by Marc Bergevin and his staff this offseason. They’ve signed a number of undrafted free agents, many of them centres to try and bolster the roster of an AHL team that struggled to fill out a line up at various points last year. Martineau’s one way deal means he cannot be sent down to the ECHL, which means he could see a decent amount of time on the ice under the tutelage of former rival coach Joel Bouchard.
