Canada was given a scare by Latvia last game in what was a clash between the Latvians’ team structure and the Canadians’ individual skill. Canada came out on top, but needed overtime to do so, which was just a two-point result rather than the three a club receives for a regulation win.

Canada is still in the best position in Group B, however, as every other team has been dealt a loss. Finland’s overtime defeat at the hands of a strong Czech squad scrubbed two points off the maximum they could earn from the preliminary round. Canada can now claim the top spot in the group by winning the final two matches in any fashion.

The biggest match will be on New Year’s Eve versus Finland, but first they have to get through Denmark. It shouldn’t be a major challenge considering that the Danes have been outscored 13-4 through two games, but you can’t go into a game expecting a win at the World Juniors, as Latvia almost proved two nights ago.
