Preliminary Round Game 7: Finland vs. Sweden
How to watch
Start time: 6:10 AM EDT / 12:10 PM CET
In Canada: TSN (English) RDS (French)
Streaming: CBC Gem, RDS, TSN+
The Finns had a lot of shots in their opening game, but in a familiar story for the nation it had trouble turning those into goals. They outshot Slovakia 40-25, but lost 4-1. Sweden, on the other hand, found plenty of offence on 60 shots versus Italy, originally getting a scare when Luca Frigo opened the scoring but going on to a 5-2 victory.
Finland will need to convert on its chances to compete with its neighbour and rival today. The shots will probably be close between the teams, but the Swedes will be favoured to take the win.
Preliminary Round Game 8: Italy vs. Slovakia
How to watch
Start time: 6:10 AM EDT / 12:10 PM CET
In Canada: Sportsnet (English) ICI Télé (French)
Streaming: CBC Gem, Sportsnet+
Juraj Slafkovský marched through Finland’s normally stifling defence in his opening game, and it could be a big day for the Slovak if he and his linemates do the same versus Italy. The Italians will of course want a win, but the main goal today will probably be about keeping the score close and concerning themselves with goal differential for when the qualification matchups are being set.
Preliminary Round Game 9: France vs. Czechia
How to watch
Start time: 10:40 AM EDT / 4:40 PM CET
In Canada: CBC, Sportsnet (English) ICI Télé (French)
Streaming: CBC Gem, Sportsnet+
The Czechs played a lot better than the 5-0 scoreline in their loss to Canada suggests, so France will have a difficult time claiming a win today. The French were unable to find the net versus Switzerland on Thursday, and today’s opponent might be even tougher.
Preliminary Round Game 10: Canada vs. Switzerland
How to watch
Start time: 3:10 PM EDT / 9:10 PM CET
In Canada: CBC (English) RDS2 (French)
Streaming: CBC Gem, RDS
The only two teams to post shutouts in their opening games meet up in the final game of the day. Canada was pushed hard by the Czechs, at least for two periods, before putting the game away. Leonardo Genoni stopped all 27 shots he faced from France, giving the Swiss an important opening win.
Switzerland will provide another challenge to Team Canada and has the ability to score a few goals. But even the strong defence Czechia brought to yesterday’s game wasn’t enough to slow down the Canadians, and today may not be any different.
