As expected, there were a lot of trades on the opening day of the draft considering there’s a limited group of high-quality free agents available this summer. Some of the rumoured stars found new homes, but many are still being talked about in trade discussions. It’s unlikely that the non-first-round picks left at this point will be enough to make a move happen today and those talks will extend into the summer, leaving today’s trades to be mostly for moving up and down the draft order.
There are still a lot of highly touted prospects available, so we may see more trades, especially in the second round. The Montreal Canadiens have already moved up once this draft, and claimed one of the steals of last year’s draft by moving up to the second spot in Round 2 to select Alexander Zharovsky, so perhaps they will attempt something similar today to add another prospect to the pool.
