Winning just two games in the preliminary round wasn’t enough for Canada to claim top spot in the group, nor even enough to finish second behind Team USA after losing to their North American rival on New Year’s Eve. Instead, it ended up as the third seed, and that means a tough quarter-final matchup with Czechia — a matchup that proved too difficult last year when Canada lost and didn’t make it to the medal round.

Canada will be the underdog today versus last tear’s bronze medalist. While the Canadians have struggled to score goals, the Czechs have posted 25 through four games while allowing just nine to opponents. They fell to Sweden 4-2 in the final game of the preliminary round, falling just short of taking the top spot in Group B.

Czechia also has a strong power play, and Canada has had major issues staying out of the penalty box. To that end, Carson Rehkopf, who took two minor penalties on Tuesday versus Team USA, has been scratched from tonight’s lineup, making room for 2025 NHL Draft-eligible Porter Martone. Head coach Dave Cameron can only hope that will be enough of a change to help his team upset a better club.
