After some lopsided games in a rather short third round of the NHL post-season, the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers took to the Rogers Place ice looking like evenly matched teams. Momentum shifted throughout regulation as the conference champions traded pressure, and the score was fittingly tied at the end of the third period.
Overtime was a very different story. In a frame you would expect the focus to be on shutdown defence to try to outlast the opponent, the Oilers put 10 shots on the Panthers while holding near constant control of the puck. That relentless pressure forced a Panthers defenceman into a late delay-of-game penalty, and the Oilers capitalized on the power player on Leon Draisaitl’s second goal of the game.
It looked like the Panthers were running out of steam in the fourth period, while the Oilers were eager to grab the win in the opener. Whether that was a disparity in energy or an Edmonton team that just has a slight edge in desperation level after being the team to fall short a year ago, the Oilers have gotten out in front in the race to four wins, and can take a major step toward the ultimate goal with a repeat performance.
