It was a surprising performance from the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1. A team that had allowed few goals or even great scoring chances through the opening two rounds was picked apart by the Florida Panthers. Allowing 18 goals in the first 10 games of the post-season, the Hurricanes were scored on five times in a 5-2 loss.

It was a demoralizing effort, especially considering the Hurricanes have been swept in each of their past three appearances in the conference finals. With their team clearly on the way to a 13th consecutive defeat in third-round action, Lenovo Center emptied out almost to the same degree as Scotiabank Arena had in the final two games of the Panthers’ series with the Maple Leafs.

Carolina can’t afford to go down 0-2 before even making the trip to Sunrise. Rod Brind’Amour’s team needs to overcome the shock of such a lopsided result and find its footing, or this series versus a rapidly improving Panthers club could be all but over a couple of games in.
