Montreal got out to a big lead in the opening half of the season, and that helped the Victoire survive a late-season slump and still claim the top spot in the league. With the ability to choose their first-round opponent, the Victoire opted for an Ottawa Charge club that finished third in the league standings but is currently missing star goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer due to injury.

Montreal won the first four meetings with the Charge during their hot start, but then lost the final two. There are no easy matchups in a six-team league, but we’ll find out if Montreal’s gamble on playing a backup goaltender pans out.

The league has made more of a point to watch for embellishment, and that was bad news for the Washington Capitals in Game 1 as they were only able to draw two penalties on the night. With relatively little time on special teams, the game went to overtime tied 1-1, and there Jaccob Slavin added to his great showcase this season with the winning goal.

Washington’s work in the regular season to claim home-ice advantage for the opening three rounds has now been taken away by a team that finished 12 points lower in the standings. How will the Capitals respond to trailing a series for the first time?

Pacific Division Final Game 2: Vegas Golden Knights vs. Edmonton Oilers

EDM leads 1-0

Start time: 9:30 PM EDT / 6:30 PM PDT

When the Edmonton Oilers trailed by two goals halfway through the first period, many thought the run they went on to close out the Los Angeles Kings was coming to an end. But the Oilers responded with four unanswered goals to pull off another comeback.

Las Vegas suffered a loss in the opening two home games of their series with the Minnesota Wild and managed to pull through in six games, so while the Oilers may have crafted an early upset, their work in the Pacific Division Final is far from done.
