It was an emotional start to the 2025 NHL Draft when Matthew Schaefer was selected first overall and immediately thought of his mother, who had died of breast cancer in February of last year. Schaefer was the top-ranked prospect by a significant margin, and projected to lead the New York Islanders from the back end for the foreseeable future.
Thirty-one other prospects were chosen over the next four hours, including two more by the Islanders and 19 Canadians in total in the opening round. But that’s just the start of the two-day event. Today, six more rounds will take place in Los Angeles as teams look for players who can develop into future NHLers down the line.
The Montreal Canadiens used the two first-round picks they held to acquire Noah Dobson on Friday, but they still hold 10 picks in this draft, half of them in rounds two and three. Already with a full prospect cupboard and a number of picks for next year’s draft, what will the Habs do on this day?
