Bottom Six Minutes Episode XXII: This is the end, for now

New, comments

The Cinderella run has ended, but there are positives to take from all this.

NHL: Stanley Cup Final-Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Montreal Canadiens went on an unbelievable run to the Stanley Cup Finals. A team that nobody expected to get out of the first round took out three teams that nobody gave them a shot of beating, and didn’t bow out until facing the reigning champions.

It is obviously the most disappointing end to their Cinderella run, but there are plenty of positives to take from this. I know that many of us may not be interested in hearing about the positives of losing in the finals, but I think it’s necessary to focus this episode on these as much as possible.

There are of course plenty of what ifs. What if Tampa wasn’t $18 million over the cap? What if the Habs won game 2 and changed the entire complexion of the series? What if Carey Price played as well in games 1 and 3 as he did in 4 and 5? What if...

You get the point. But as disheartened as we all understandably are at this point, the fact that the Habs gave us this run indicates that they’re built better than anyone gave them credit for. This team has talent, and they could be back in this position sooner than later.

Hopefully, next time, with a better result.
