After an unusual year, we’re now set to begin the NHL Entry Draft, featuring seven rounds of 32 selections (minus the first round with the Arizona Coyotes force to forfeit their pick) to bring in the next wave of young hockey talent.

Many of these players played very little in their COVID-affected draft seasons, so scouting staffs and their general managers don’t have as strong a picture as usual of the prospect crop. Add in the fact that this was regarded as a weaker class even before the pandemic arrived, and you have a stage set for an abnormally high number of trades.

We’ve already seen one big one, with the Philadelphia Flyers trading the 14th pick (13th overall) to the Buffalo Sabres to acquire defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen. Other trades involving 2021 draft slots have been taking place over the past few days as teams try to set their rosters for the next season. We will still see 31 players find NHL homes tonight, but the selection order could be a lot different from what is currently planned.
