The Laval Rocket have named Kelly Buchberger as an assistant coach, the first new addition to Jean-Francois Houle’s coaching staff.
The Laval Rocket announced on Thursday that the team has agreed to terms on a three-year contract with Kelly Buchberger to serve as one of the assistants to new head coach Jean-François Houle.#GoRocket pic.twitter.com/joxv26McVd— Rocket de Laval (@RocketLaval) July 22, 2021
Like Houle, Buchberger spent time in the Edmonton Oilers organization. He spent six years as an NHL assistant there, before moving to director of player personnel and director of player development where he undoubtedly worked closely with Houle, who was a coach for Edmonton’s American Hockey League affiliate.
He most recently was the head coach of the Tri-City Americans for two seasons and assistant with the New York Islanders for one season. Luke Richardson was also on that Islanders staff. He also was the head coach of the AHL’s Springfield Falcons for one season.
Buchberger, 54, also had a long NHL career, and was the captain of both the Oilers and Atlanta Thrashers. He played 1182 NHL games with five different teams.
He is yet another former NHL player to join the organization as a coach in the past year, joining Sean Burke and Trevor Letowski.
