Brendan Gallagher took a deflected shot from Alexander Romanov off his hand in the first period on Monday night, going directly to the locker room. After getting evaluated for the rest of the period, the Montreal Canadiens announced that he would not return to the game.

It’s not the type of report the team wanted, especially given his history with broken bones from very similar plays. It’s hard not to expect the worst from such a situation, but we’ll have to wait for further information to know how long he will be out.

UPDATE: The team has placed him on Long-Term Injured Reserve meaning that they will be able to replace his salary, minus the team’s available cap space. He is expected to be out at least six weeks, which makes his earliest probable return into the post-season.
