The big development for the Montreal Canadiens organization today is the placement of Jonathan Drouin on long-term injured reserve as he takes a leave of absence for personal reasons. The only thing to do in this situation is to wish him the best.

To replace him on a roster already missing a few forwards, it appears as though the team will add Michael Frolik as an emergency recall, depending on the health of Tomas Tatar who still seems to be dealing with his lower-body issue despite playing in Monday’s crucial win in Calgary.

It also means that the salary cap is no longer an obstacle with one of the highest-paid forwards out, so Alexander Romanov can be recalled, using up the Canadiens’ fourth and final recall slot and locking in the roster for the rest of the regular season. It means Cayden Primeau, Jake Evans, and Cole Caufield will all have to return to either the taxi squad or the AHL once some of the other players start to get healthy, but they will all be dressed this evening.

The lineup will be a mix of guys who’ve played all season long and others who know their stay is only temporary. We can expect Evans and Caufield to give it their best effort to help Montreal knock off the division’s top team while they’re able to play for the NHL club.
