After what was a very good game against the Edmonton Oilers until it turned into a very bad game, the Canadiens have found a spot for newcomer Jon Merrill, taking out one of the only defenceman to have a positive goal differential on Monday — Brett Kulak — to play along Alexander Romaonv, the other member of the blue-line contingent to have a +1 on the stat sheet. If Dominique Ducharme is happy with the defensive skills that Merrill has shown in recent years, that third pairing could see more time as the Habs look for some more advantages to open up the offence.

The Canadiens will have to play the game (and the full series versus the Calgary Flames that follows) without Carey Price, who is out with a concussion sustained in the first period of the last game. Jake Allen wasn’t able to compensate for some defensive breakdowns from the team late, but what the netminder needs the most is some goals from the skaters in front of him.

Montreal has only had three goal-scorers in the past four games, one each from Eric Staal and the decommissioned Kulak, and a key pair from Tyler Toffoli in the Habs’ only win in that stretch. If they want to go toe-to-toe with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl (who will play on separate lines in this game), they’ll need fist bumps for multiple players tonight.
