Tonight’s game between the Canadiens and Oilers is currently in limbo due to two players — Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Joel Armia — needing to enter the COVID protocol after tests for them or those around must have come back something other than negative. Both players took part in the team’s morning skate, meaning that if they happened to be infected, there’s the possible of viral spread.

This is a similar situation to the only other game at the Bell Centre this season between the two clubs, when it emerged that Jesse Puljujarvi had had an inconclusive test (though it later turned out to be a false alarm). That game was simply delayed an hour to get the test results for other players.

If the game does go ahead, (1) that means the situation likely isn’t as serious as feared since the two players in question were with their teammates earlier in the day, and (2) the Habs will have to fill out the roster with taxi squad players. It would have been nice to see the likes of Lukas Vejdemo and Jesse Ylõnen get their shot, but with the Laval Rocket playing in Calgary, the spots will likely be granted to Laurent Dauphin and Michael Frolik, the two forwards held in reserve.

For now all we can do is wait to see what the league decides to do, and hope neither Kotkaniemi nor Armia has actually been infected.
