The Montreal Canadiens have continued to trim their roster ahead of the National Hockey League’s roster deadline later today.
They sent goaltender Cayden Primeau to the Laval Rocket and defenceman Kaiden Guhle to the Prince Albert Raiders.
This means that Samuel Montembeault will be Jake Allen’s backup to start the season. Sami Niku is also likely ready to go and will be the team’s seventh defenceman.
Guhle had an impressive camp but will go back to Junior where he will be captain in Prince Albert and a key member of Canada’s World Junior team. Primeau will go to Laval where he will likely be the team’s number one goaltender with Michael McNiven.
Cedric Paquette returned to practice and skated on the team's fourth line with Mathieu Perreault and Arturri Lehkonen on Monday. Ryan Poehling and Alex Belzile were the extra forwards.
The Canadiens start the season Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto.
