The tournament is down to the final four, with the finalists from the past two tournaments still in contention.

Playing two of the lowest seeds to make the quarter-finals, Canada and Russia nevertheless had tough tests to make it to today’s meeting. We knew Germany had a good group of forwards to lead them, but with a lack of depth made worse by the COVID situation, it was quite surprising to see them keep the opening quarter-final competitive. The Czech Republic also held the high-flying Canadians to their lowest goal total yet.

Canada and Russia meet in a rematch of last year’s final, with only one getting the shot at a gold medal this time around. The two clubs did meet in a pre-tournament game two weeks ago, but not much can be read into that meaningless 1-0 result for the host nation.

It’s going to be two skilled clubs that like to control the pace clashing in all three zones today. It could be a back-and-forth thriller between the long-time rivals.
