On the anniversary of Carey Price’s birth, the Montreal Canadiens played “Happy Birthday” on the pipes behind Carter Hart. If you asked the Habs’ goaltender, he certainly would have preferred a goal of support instead. He saw a puck go in the net off the thigh of Jakub Voracek in the opening minutes of the game, and not even stopping every actual shot he faced the rest of the way was enough to get a win.

To the Philadelphia Flyers’ credit, they did another good job of getting a stick on what seemed like every single pass the Canadiens attempted, just as they had in Game 1. Montreal’s only chances came when players just launched the puck at the net on individual rushes, and they were unable to hit the inside dimensions of the four-by-six cage Hart was tasked with defending.

The Canadiens were incapable of forcing their way to the net, as they had to great effect in Game 2, and that has to be the game plan Kirk Muller reminded his players of after their first time getting shut out this post-season. A concerted effort to break through the neutral zone will be required today to get some offensive success, force the Flyers to think less about simply locking things down, and get the series back on even terms.
