The Canadiens will try to beat a non-playoff team, which hasn’t been easy this year.

Brendan Gallagher is feeling well enough to return after developing some post-concussion symptoms in his most recent game. The player to drop out of the lineup to make room is Jesperi Kotkaniemi, who will watch the game from the press box tonight in Buffalo.

Gallagher’s return drops Ilya Kovalchuk down a line, where the Russian winger will be centred by Nick Suzuki. Given that the Sabres are dealing with a decimated lineup as well, that second trio could get some quality offensive looks. The two haven’t spent much time together (about 26 minutes at five-on-five) and have dealt with some defensive issues. That’s something Claude Julien will hope he’s corrected by placing Joel Armia on the opposite flank to help them out in their own end.

The Sabres are still without their star rookie, Victor Olofsson, who’s missed most of January with a lower-body injury. He had 16 goals at the time of his departure — nine of them on the power play — and has been missed by the team .

Buffalo is also down a starting goalie after Linus Ullmark had to be carried to the dressing room following an awkward fall in the crease the other night. Carter Hutton has allowed at least five goals in his last three starts, and that’s something that the Canadiens will surely be looking to take advantage of.
