Canadiens vs. Senators: Game thread, rosters, lines, and how to watch

New, comments

If two shutout losses in a row don’t provide enough of a spark, one last chance to earn a roster spot should do the trick for the Habs tonight.

With less than a week to go until the season begins, only those who still have shots at making the roster are in Montreal, with one extra body at each position. Tonight’s game offers the coaching staff a final viewing of the players in competitive action before the number of players at the NHL level needs to be trimmed to 23.

For Claude Julien, that means another 60 minutes to evaluate Nick Suzuki, Ryan Poehling, and Cale Fleury. All have looked like NHL players throughout training camp, but with waivers required for most of the players they’d be replacing, the coach needs to be sure the rookies are fully ready before parting with more established options.

Carey Price gets into the final game of the pre-season after a week off nursing a bruised hand. Jesperi Kotkaniemi will contest his fourth consecutive game, looking to ramp up his play just in time for the season to start. He had some good moments in what was a rough outing for many players on Wednesday, and will look to follow up on that vesus a team Montreal has already beaten twice on the tune-up calendar.

The mid-rebuild Senators are the opponent tonight, with many young players still vying for their place with the big club. They may not be in contention for a post-season position this year, but there are some top-end talents who will provide the challenge Julien is hoping for in tonight’s evaluations.
