More than five months after their last game action, the Montreal Canadiens have come back together to prepare for the new season. After a few days of off- and on-ice training, they’ll pit their top players against one another in an intrasquad match.

There are some new faces and numbers to get acquainted with. Nick Cousins (#21) will take on a similar role to the one previously held by Andrew Shaw. On defence, Ben Chiarot (#8) takes Jordie Benn’s number, and looks to be the lock as Jeff Petry’s partner. Otto Leskinen (#64) will aim to keep himself in the coversation for a role on the left side.

Key numbers to pay attention to will be Ryan Poehling’s #25, and the #14 of Nick Suzuki as he tries to impress the staff in their first look at him with the organization. Cayden Primeau probably won’t give us much of a glimpse of the #30 on his back with the great positioning he shows, but he will be recognizable with his quick butterfly positioning. Josh Brook’s #46 should be a top target, as it could be a fixture in the regular-season rotation if the offensive prospect’s partnership with Brett Kulak is any indication.

There’s still plenty of time to change things up before the regular season begins, and seven tuneup games versus other NHL clubs will give the staff a better judge on their best alignments, but today’s contest offers the last chance to stand out among the entire pool of players for those trying to cling to NHL positions and the young prospects seeking to grasp one for themselves.
